Need to find a job?

logo

I know some people out there that have been laid off and are fnding it difficult to find new jobs. I noticed in the The Mirror this past weekend that there was an ad for a website that helps people find jobs close to their homes. Jobs can be searched by postal code, type of job you would like to have or by Town/City. I thought this was a very user friendly website and the fact that you can surf by postal code was amazing. The website is called LocalWork.ca Why not start off 2010 with a click of the mouse!

Good luck!

Need help removing snow this winter?

snow_shovel_1-s

I always find it hard to find someone who can help my clients remove snow from their drives and pathways. I always recommend calling Andrew at Terra. He can be reached at (416) 449-7095. I have heard good things about a company called Northern Snow Removal but have never used their services myself. They can be contacted at (416) 466-2521. If you are considering hiring a snow removal company his winter I recommend you call that company right away and book them. Their schedules fill up so fast that most companies will not take on any clients before we even get a major snow fall.

Save your health, energy & frustration this season and let a professional lift the snow for you!

50 million blinds recalled!

adb7df52-23a1-4e22-83a4-bfa7b0e7e64e_3

WARNING:
This article came from 680 news:

The U.S. government and the window covering industry are recalling more than 50-million roman-style shades and roll-up blinds because of the risk children may be strangled by the cords.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said five deaths and 16 near-strangulations from Roman shades have been reported.

In Canada, the recall involves roman blinds by Vadain International Inc. The blinds are made of polyester and cotton blends, and come in different colours. The blinds are available in various dimensions: 27"x68", 30"x68", 36"x68", and 48"x68".

On its website, Health Canada said the loop of the inner cord on the back of the roman blinds is too big, posing a strangulation risk if a child places his or her neck in the inner cord loop.

However, neither Vadain International or Health Canada has received reports of any injuries.

Over 1,700 of the recalled blinds were sold in Canada at Home Depot stores from July-October 2009.

Health Canada has advised consumers to stop using the blinds and contact Vadain International to receive a package of cord stoppers.

Consumers can also return the recalled blinds to their nearest Home Depot store to receive a free replacement blind with the cord stoppers already installed. If the blinds are not at a particular Home Depot store, consumers can receive it by mail.

For more information, consumers may contact Vadain toll-free at 1-888-988-8808, or their local Home Depot store. For store locations click here: Home Depot

To view pictures of similar blinds, health canada published these examples: Recalled blinds

Snow shoveling tips courtesy of EMS Toronto!

180px-Snowstorm

It's that time of year again so I thought I would share some helpful tips on how to shovel properly to avoid injury!

Preparation
1. Talk to your doctor about this activity and your health status before winter season arrives.

2. Think twice if you:
a) Have had a heart attack or have other forms of heart disease
b) Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels
c) Are a smoker
d) Lead a sedentary lifestyle

3. Consider hiring a student or using a volunteer service if you are a senior.

4. Shovel at least 1-2 hours after eating and avoid caffeine and nicotine.

5. Warm up first (walk or march in place for several minutes before beginning).

6. Start slow and continue at a slow pace (Suggestion: shovel for 5-7 minutes and rest 2-3 minutes).

7. Drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.

8. Shovel early and often: new snow is lighter than heavily packed/partially melted snow & take frequent breaks.

Tools
Shovel:
1. Sturdy yet lightweight is best (a small plastic blade is better than a large metal blade)
2. An ergonomically correct model (curved handle) will help prevent injury and fatigue
3. Spray the blade with a silicone-based lubricant (snow does not stick and slides off)

Clothing:
1. Wear multiple layers and cover as much skin as possible
2. Wear a hat and scarf (make sure neither block your vision)
3. Wear mittens (tend to be warmer than gloves)
4. Wear boots with non-skid/no-slip rubber soles

Technique
1. Always try to push snow rather than lifting it.
2. Protect your back by lifting properly and safely:
a) Stand with feet at hip width for balance
b) Hold the shovel close to your body
c) Space hands apart to increase leverage
d) Bend from your knees not your back
e) Tighten your stomach muscles while lifting
f) Avoid twisting while lifting
g) Walk to dump snow rather than throwing it
h) When snow is deep, shovel small amounts (1-2 inches at a time) at a time.
i) If the ground is icy or slippery, spread salt, sand or kitty litter to create better foot traction.

Knowledge
1. Shoveling snow is strenuous activity that is very stressful on the heart.
2. Exhaustion makes you more susceptible to frostbite, injury and hypothermia.
3. Stop shoveling and call 911 if you have:
a) Discomfort or heaviness in the chest, arms or neck
b) Unusual or prolonged shortness of breath
c) A dizzy or faint feeling
d) Excessive sweating or nausea and vomiting

Plant a tree & save money with your heating bills!

logo

I wanted to share this great website with you. The company is called LEAF and they are a local, non-profit organization that helps you figure out which tress or shrubs to plant in your backyard. Most importantly they are dedicated to the protection and improvement of the urban forest.

By planting trees in and around your home you can greatly reduce your heating and cooling needs simply by being able to conserve more.

The LEAF website has price lists, a backyard tree planting program (that you can print off), a blog and so much more. I encourage you to take a look.

Baby cribs re-called in Canada and the U.S.!!

news-cribrecall

Attention all parents! There has been a major recall! Over two million drop-side baby cribs made by Stork Craft have been recalled across Canada and the U.S.

The Canadian-based company is urging parents to stop using the cribs because of problems with the drop-side detachment.

When the side rail separates, the baby can get trapped in the gap and can suffocate or get strangled by the rails.

The cribs were made between 1993 and October 2009.

Nearly 150,000 of the cribs on recall carry the Fisher-Price logo.

A free repair kit is available from Stork Craft that will convert the drop-side to a fixed side. Consumers can call the toll-free number at: (877) 274-0277

There are reports that drop-side cribs could soon be removed from the marketplace altogether.

If you have a crib, I urge you to please check who the manufactorer is and if it is on the recall list.

Toys with high levels of lead!

HA1189

With the holiday season around the corner, some of you may have started your holiday shopping. On my drive home yesterday I heard a report on 680 news that said the following:

"According to a California-based advocacy group, some children's toys carrying the Barbie and Disney logos have high levels of lead.

The Centre for Environmental Health tested about 250 products bought at major retailers and it found that in seven of the toys, levels of lead exceeded federal limits.

They include: a Barbie bike flair accessory kit, a Disney Tinkerbell water lily necklace and a Dora the Explorer activity tote.

Studies have found lead can cause irreversible brain damage in young children".

I know this may be time consuming but before purchasing your gifts this year, I recommend that you google each toy first to ensure that it is safe and meets all safety regulations.

For updates tune into 680am news or go to www.680news.com

Habitat for humanity

logo2

Considering a home renovation but find that the materials for your project is too expensive? We recommend checking out Habitat for Humanity. There are lots of locations across Toronto including Habitat Restores . The Restores carry all kinds new or gently used items from sinks to cabinetry, doors, furniture, flooring and the list goes on. Prices are usually half of the retail price or less!

We recommend that you call ahead to find out if what you need is in stock. Keep in mind too that Habitat may be able to use what you are getting rid of. They ask that you show them your donation material first before you drop it off as they may refuse it (due to condition or if they have too many of the same in stock). If Habitat won't take it then try the Salvation Army, Goodwill or Value Village.

The best part of it all is that by supporting Habitat, you have provided over 600 men, woman and children with safe, decent and affordable homes.

Free google 411 service!

goog411-logo

Look what Google came up with! It's amazing but do not do this while driving!!!

1-800-goog411 or 1-800-466-4411.

How does it work? Simply call the above number when you need to be connected to a restaurant or want to order a pizza but you can't remember the phone number. If you know the name of the company or the type of service you require then it will connect you. It is exactly the same as 411 but there is no fee charged to you! From your home phone you will be automatically connected to the company you have asked for. From your cell phone you will be connected but you will also be texted the phone number for later use. It's terrific!

This is nationwide, Canada & US, and it is absolutely free! Works on cell and landline phones, all you have to remember is 1-800-466-4411. Give it a try.
