Sippy cup recall

If your child drinks out of a sippy cup, you're going to want to triple-check that it's not a part of the most recent product recall. Roughly 3.1 million Tommee Tippee children's spill-proof cups are a part of a massive voluntary recall because of mold, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today.

Five different types of cups are affected: the First Sips Transition cup, Trainer Sippee cup, Sippee cup (including Cute Quips), Sportee bottle, and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers. The cups have a seven- to 10-ounce capacity and are geared toward children ages 4 to 12 months. All of the cups involved in the recall have a white one-piece removable valve.

"Mold can develop on the removable, one-piece, white valve inside the spill-proof Tommee Tippee Sippee cups when it remains wet or moist and is infrequently cleaned," the commission stated in its release. "Mold ingestion poses a risk of gastrointestinal symptoms and infections in consumers with compromised immune systems."

In fact, there have already been more than 3,000 reports of mold in the Tommee Tippee cup valve, including 68 incidents of children experiencing diarrhea and vomiting. For several months, consumers have been taking to social media to share photos of the mold damage they discovered after cracking open the opaque valves.

The brand even responded to concerned parents back in February, saying that "child health and well-being is at the heart of everything we do, and we're taking the current concerns around our Sippee cups very seriously."

If you purchased one of these cups — read on to see a selection of the affected cups — between December 2014 and May 2016, you'll want to stop using it immediately and contact the company to receive a free replacement cup.
